Bio
I was
born in Scotland and grew up in the town of Queensbury in upstate New York.
I received my Masters of Science degree in Educational Psychology and
Statistics from the State University of New York at Albany. My Bachelor of
Arts degree is in Art and Elementary Education from Castleton State College
in Vermont. I was exposed to a variety of art at a young age through my
father who is a self-taught artist and sculptor. I enjoy creating art in
colored pencil, pastel, and pen and ink. My artwork is largely influenced by
the natural designs of Native American artists, as well as the Art Nouveau
movement of the early 20th century.
This is my 6th
year as one of the art instructors at ARCS. I believe that creativity is an
essential part of a well-rounded education, and that all children should be
given the opportunity to express themselves as individuals. Art provides
children of all learning styles the means to connect with the world around
them. To me, the main focus of art education is to give children a vehicle
for expression through exposure to a variety of media and experiences.
Importance should be placed on the process of creating art whereby students
are actively discovering and exploring new ideas, rather than a single focus
on the finished product. Many of the activities are designed to support the
concepts that students are learning in other subject areas. I welcome into
my classroom any talents or skills that parents would like to share with the
students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or
suggestions that you might have to make this art experience more enjoyable
for the students. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year with your
youngsters.
